Couch fire sparks apartment evacuation

State Fire Marshal investigates cause of fire

ORLANDO, Fla. – Dozens of people were forced from their homes after a couch caught fire in a second-story apartment near SeaWorld.

Orange County Fire Rescue said it received a 911 call about the fire at the McKinley at Monterey Lake apartments just after 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Neighbors said they saw heavy smoke coming out of an apartment in the complex as emergency crews arrived on scene.

Firefighters evacuated an apartment building as they worked to extinguish the flames.  Residents said they were allowed to return to their homes after about an hour.

Firefighters said it appeared the fire started on a couch in the living room of the apartment.

The apartment, which was vacant and under renovation, suffered heavy smoke and heat damage, according to authorities.

No other apartments were damaged and no one was injured in the fire.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
