Woman dies, boy rescued in swimming pool incident

Port Orange police investigate death

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A woman died after she and a 7-year-old were pulled from a Port Orange apartment complex swimming pool by the boy's father, authorities said.

Kandice Maureen McCarthy, 38, was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center and was pronounced dead, Port Orange police said.  The boy was admitted to the hospital in stable condition.

Port Orange police were called to the Canalview Apartments on Canalview Boulevard around 3:30 p.m. Saturday over reports of a possible drowning.

The boy's father, William Groom, told police he and his son went to the pool, and McCarthy was already there.

According to police, the boy and McCarthy were swimming together, and the boy's father was seated on the edge of the pool.  The father told police that McCarthy appeared to be having difficulty and she and his son went underwater.

Groom said he jumped in and rescued his son before going back in and pulling McCarthy from the water.

No other details were released by police.

An investigation is ongoing.
