Police believe UF student jumped to death at stadium

University police say no indication of foul play

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Police say a 26-year-old journalism student apparently jumped to his death from a stairwell in the west stands of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at the University of Florida.

University police spokesman Brad Barber told the Gainesville Sun that Michael Richard Edmonds Jr. was pronounced dead just after 7 p.m. Sunday.

Barber says there is no indication of foul play and investigators were still trying to determine what happened.

Court records indicate Edmonds had been arrested Saturday on a DUI charge.

A student told the newspaper that she was outside the stadium when she heard a loud noise. She saw a body on the sidewalk and called 911 while others tried to revive the man.

Barber says the stadium is open in the offseason, but the stairwell appeared to be locked.
