Police: Woman seeking job stayed for drinks, left child in car
Job seeker had 3 tequila shots at Ormond Beach sports bar, police say
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – An applicant for a job at a sports bar was arrested after she decided to stay for drinks while leaving her 5-year-old son unattended for an hour inside her car, police said.
Authorities said Mallory Renee Mims, 22, had three tequila shots Friday just before midnight at the Pirana Bar and Grille in Ormond Beach after filling out a job application.
According to a police report, a customer came in the bar and announced that a small child was alone in a car parked outside. Police said the boy was still buckled into his car seat.
"She was up at the bar for 45 minutes. Somebody just pulled up and said 'there's a kid in the car,'" according to a 911 caller.
Police said Mims denied that she was the child's mother.
"She's actually out of the car right now, she was saying its not her car," the caller said. "She's out there trying to justify herself."
Police said the bartender eventually took away Mims' keys until officers arrived and arrested her on child neglect charges.
Mims' mother took custody of the child, who was not injured.
Mims' neighbors said they were shocked to hear about the incident.
"Very friendly, nice young lady," said Debbue Beaulieu. "The little boy, they play in the yard together. I'm shocked, actually, shocked and disappointed."
The Department of Children and Families has opened an investigation.
