MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – A surfer on Melbourne Beach was taken to the hospital after he was bitten by a shark.
Brevard County Sheriff's deputies said it happened about 50 feet from shore at 7:28 p.m. Thursday.

The 28-year-old surfer told police he was paddling out when he felt something grab his hand. After pulling his hand free, the man saw a 5-foot-long shark swimming away.
The man tried driving himself to the hospital but later called 911 in Indialantic.
Paramedics said his injuries were consistent with a shark bite.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital. His name and condition were not immediately released.
