Deputies: Grandparents use SUV to tow 7-year-old on toy car

Deputies say couple thought stunt would be 'fun'

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida couple told police they thought it would be "fun" to use their SUV to tow their 7-year-old granddaughter on her toy car Sunday afternoon.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, Paul J. Berloni, 49, and Belinda Jean Berloni, 47, used two dog leashes to tie their granddaughter's Hot Wheels car to a trailer hitch.  The child was wearing a swimsuit and had no protective gear on, authorities said.

The deputy who spotted them said the SUV was going between 5 to 10 mph, WPLG-TV reported.

The arrest report states that the grandmother was sitting in the SUV's cargo area with the hatch open and was cheering on the child.

When the deputy pulled the couple over, Paul Berloni admitted to having a revoked driver's license and that he had been drinking.  The couple also admitted to having pulled this stunt all day, thinking it would be "fun" for their granddaughter.

Both grandparents have been charged with child endangerment.
