Man, 82, shoots self while cleaning gun

Deputies investigate Melbourne shooting


MELBOURNE, Fla. – An 82-year-old man was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne after accidentally shooting himself in the chest while cleaning a gun, officials said.

The shooting happened about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of Earrusso Street in unicorporated Brevard County near Cocoa, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

Brevard County sheriff's deputies were investigating the incident. Paramedics arrived minutes later and transported the man to a nearby landing zone set up in a shopping plaza parking lot.

The man was then airlifted to the trauma center at Holmes by a medical helicopter.

The man, who was conscious when paramedics arrived, told authorities that he was cleaning an unidentified gun when the weapon went off.

An investigation is ongoing.
