Man shoots burglars breaking into shed

Deputies say suspect shot in leg, went to gas station for help


DeLAND, Fla. – A man shot at two burglars breaking into his shed early Wednesday morning, hitting one of them in the leg, according to Volusia County sheriff's deputies.

According to a sheriff's spokesman, Thomas Witbeck, 62, heard a noise at his shed on Roxboro Court just after 2 a.m. He confronted two people trying to break into shed and fired multiple shots using his .22 caliber rifle and hit one man in the leg.

David Krouse, 34, who had the gunshot wound, ran from the shed and went to the RaceTrac gas station on International Speedway Boulevard., asked for help and told authorities when they arrived that he broke into the shed to find materials to sell for scrap.

He was taken to an area hospital and released. He will be charged and taken to jail. The second suspect's identity hasn't been released, but deputies told Local 6 they believe they know who it is.
