APOPKA, Fla. – A wanted man who drove off with his girlfriend's child was arrested Friday after barricading himself inside an apartment, Orange County sheriff's deputies said.
The standoff began Thursday evening in Apopka.
According to deputies, the man, who was wanted on several warrants, including battery on a law enforcement officer, was in a stolen car with his girlfriend and her child. When the man saw deputies, his girlfriend got out of the car and he drove off, with the 7-year-old girl still inside, the Sheriff's Office said.
The man drove to an apartment near 11th Street and Clarcona Road and climbed into the attic, deputies said.
The girl was found inside the apartment and was not injured, deputies said.
After a six-hour standoff, tear gas was fired into the apartment, and the man was arrested after falling through the ceiling of an adjoining unit, deputies said.
The man was taken to Florida Hospital Apopka and faces charges of kidnapping and resisting arrest without violence.
