Gay-Straight Alliance created at Marion County High School

New club at school requires parental consent

Ocala, FLA. – Students at Ocala Vanguard High School have won the right to create a Gay-Straight Alliance.

Superintendent Jim Yancey originally denied the request from two students last fall because he didn't think it was an appropriate topic for younger high school students to discuss.

Based on previous legal battles ending up in support of Gay-Straight alliances, Yancey said he had a change of heart.
Vanguard High students wanting to join the alliance must have permission from a guardian to join.

The school rules do not allow the meetings to focus on sexual content.

A faculty advisor must attend all meetings.
