ORLANDO, Fla. – The attorney for Casey Anthony on Monday has filed an appeal against her four counts of lying to law enforcement, a first-degree misdemeanor, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
According to the Sentinel, Attorney Cheney Mason filed the appeal on Monday, claiming Anthony wasn't told her right to remain silent or her right to an attorney when she made the statements to law enforcement officers in 2008. Mason also says Anthony shouldn't be facing four counts of lying to law enforcement officers, but one, the Sentinel reports.
Anthony was acquitted in July 2011 of killing her daughter, Caylee Anthony. She's currently serving a one-year probation on check fraud charges.
Anthony also faces defamation charges in a lawsuit against her by Zenaida Gonzalez, who says Anthony ruined her reputation. Gonzalez shares a similar name as a fictitious baby sitter -- Zenaida Fernandez Gonzalez -- whom Anthony initially said kidnapped her 2-year-old daughter in 2008.
At Anthony's murder trial last summer, Anthony's defense claimed Caylee drowned in the family's swimming pool and, therefore, had not been abducted. Caylee's remains were found in December 2008.
The civil trial is slated to start in January 2013. Mason accepted a subpoena for Anthony to appear at trial on Anthony's behalf last month.
