OCALA, Fla. – Marion County deputies received the first of 36 new, more fuel efficient police vehicles on Wednesday.
The new cars are 2013 Ford Interceptors. The all-wheel drive sedans include a 3.6-liter V6 eco-boost engine and 365 horsepower. Deputies say it will increase their fuel mileage by at least 20 percent and save the Sheriff's Department more than $500,000 per year. One deputy described the new fleet as being a "game-changer."
The Sheriff's Department will receive four to five interceptors each week. Deputies will be in charge of installing laptops and radios and putting on the stripes and decals.
