Investigation into cause of fire is ongoing

Thousands have perished in the deadliest fires in U.S. history, according to rankings compiled by the National Fire Protection Association.

OCALA, Fla. – At least 11 horses have died in a barn fire at an Ocala farm early Sunday morning, according to Ocala Fire Rescue.

Officials said the fire ignited at the McKathan Farms near Williston in Marion County at around 2 a.m. Sunday.

At least 11 horses have been reported dead, but fire officials said there could be more as investigators go on scene. Williston Fire District officials said the horses were killed by smoke inhalation and were show horses and family pets.

The owners of the barn saw the fire and were able to get two ponies out before the flames became too intense, according to Williston fire officials.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
