FHP: Stolen SUV crashes during pursuit, 2 arrested

Driver caught after jumping into Orlando lake

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two men were arrested early Thursday on allegations of stealing a SUV and fleeing through an upscale Orlando neighborhood.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a trooper first noticed the pair around 2 a.m. as the SUV was speeding down Orange Avenue.

Troopers said they tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver fled down a side street into the Delaney Park neighborhood.

After a short pursuit, the driver of the stolen SUV crashed near the intersection of Delaney Avenue and Delaney Park Drive, according to the FHP.

Troopers said both the passenger and driver ran off but were caught nearby.  The driver jumped into a pond in an effort to elude police, according to the FHP.

Local 6 photojournalist Mark Lehman asked the two men why they ran from authorities.  "None of your business," said one of the suspected thieves.  "I'm just trying to get to 33rd (Orange County Jail) and see if I can bond out."

Both of the men were booked into the Orange County Jail Thursday morning.
