Teen fleeing DeLand police crashes, dies

Police: Officer tried to stop 17-year-old for not wearing a seat belt

DeLAND, Fla. – A teen crashed into a tractor-trailer and died while fleeing from a DeLand police officer, who attempted to pull him over for not wearing a seat belt, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Police said around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday an officer tried to stop Trevon Lacy, 17, for a traffic violation near the intersection of Bereford Avenue and Adelle Avenue.

Lacy sped away in a Ford Explorer -- reaching speeds of about 80 mph in a 35 mph zone -- and crashed into the back of a parked tractor-trailer on Adelle Avenue, according to troopers.

Police said Lacy died on impact.

The FHP said DeLand police were following Lacy from a distance when he crashed.  Video captured by a camera inside the officer's car will not be released until an investigation has concluded, troopers said.

Troopers said Lacy never had a driver's license.

The officer involved has been placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.
