ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – A 5-year-old boy has suffered a fatal head injury after he fell from the high diving board at Lake Brantley High School on September 11, according to Seminole County Fire Rescue.
Fire officials said they received a call about a victim falling from the high dive onto concrete at Lake Brantley Aquatic Center on Tuesday afternoon at around 5 p.m. Officials said the boy fell onto the concrete and has been airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital. It's not clear what caused the fall.
The parents of Ian Freeman issued a statement Saturday saying their son died.
"For more than a week, our son, Ian Freeman, had been fighting for his life. Last night, that fight ended as Ian passed away," Christopher and Lisa Freeman said.
"We decided to donate Ian's organs. It is the only positive we can draw from this experience and will help others in need. We are extremely humbled by the outpouring of support, and in Ian's honor, we have established a fund where our friends throughout the community can make contributions. Our family, friends, and neighbors have helped us tremendously during this time. We cannot thank everyone enough for their kindness and generosity. Altamonte Springs police said Lake Brantley Aquatic Center has a child diving and swim team affiliated with the high school. Students tell Local 6 the diving board was at least 10 feet high.
