Cops: Volusia County employee stole money from needy residents

Deputies say woman used emergency assistance money for her rent

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Volusia County Human Services employee has been arrested on charges of using her job to take $1,500 of emergency assistance funds allotted to financially needy residents.

Dawn Jackson, 35, is a staff assistant at Volusia County's Human Services office. , which provides temporary emergency assistance to residents who meet certain eligibility criteria.

She has been employed since Nov. 2006 and has been assigned to Human Services since May 2008, where she was able to learn the procedures for processing applications for financial aid.

Deputies said that is what enabled her to direct finances to pay her rent twice and her utility bill once, totaling $1,532.

After being called in by a supervisor, Jackson said she knew that she had been caught, according to the report. Sheriff's investigators arrested Jackson at her DeLand home Wednesday night.

She has been charged with grand theft and fraudulently obtaining goods, services or money, both felony offenses.
