Plane makes emergency landing in Volusia County

Deputies say pilot, passenger unharmed

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Volusia County deputies said a single-plane had to make an emergency landing on Thursday night after the aircraft had mechanical difficulties.

Deputies said the plane landed on a road next to the New Smyrna Speedway near State Road 44 and State Road 415, right after rush hour. The pilot and passenger were not injured, deputies said.

"He landed on Highway 44 and he apparently had some engine knocks and decided to land. It is kind of strange to have an airplane in your parking lot," said Robert Hart, owner of New Smyrna Speedway.

The Federal Aviation Administration would not let the pilot move the plane Thursday night. Workers were able to fix the issue and the plane took off Friday morning.
