Schools reconsider attendance awards

Students attending class while sick

ORLANDO, Fla. – Some schools are considering doing away with perfect attendance awards because students are going to class even though they're sick.

Parenting.com published a story focusing on an elementary school in California that may end its perfect attendance program for next year.

Contagious diseases, such as the flu, can spread quickly in close environments with shared surfaces -- like classrooms and hallways.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends that people with the flu or flu-like symptoms should stay home until their fever has dropped below 100 degrees for 24 hours without medicine.  Frequent hand-washing is also recommended.
