Families shocked after St. Cloud cemetery buried bodies in wrong plots

16 families affected by dated grid system, director says

ST. CLOUD, Fla. – Sixteen families who have family members buried at Mount Peace Cemetery in St. Cloud got a shocking call saying their loved one was not buried in the correct plot.

Stephanie Holtkamp, Director of the St. Cloud Parks and Recreation Department said she believes the previous sexton, who took care of the grounds at Mt. Peace, made the mistake following a dated grid system.

Holtkamp said they realized the problem after digging up what they thought was an empty plot and discovering a casket 6 feet under.

Out of the 16 families affected, two of them wanted their loved ones dug up and moved to the correct plot of land so there would be more room for family members to be buried together.

Holtkamp said the city covered the costs of the work and the families were present when the move took place.

After 5 months of going over the plots of land and $7,000 worth of corrections, St Cloud came up with a new grid system with clear markers labeling the plot so there is no further confusion.
