Mark O'Mara calls Zimmerman-focused PSA against 'stand your ground' inaccurate

PSA shows reenactment of Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman altercation

SANFORD, Fla. – The attorney for George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, has called the new video reenactment by the Coalition Against Gun Violence "dramatic" and "wildly inaccurate."

The public service announcement was released on Monday runs online and may soon run on television, said a spokesman for The Coalition Against Gun Violence, which created the ad the groups calls "chilling."

It uses clips from Zimmerman's call to police, the gunshot and a sobbing neighbor. But the finale comes when the camera pulls back and shows Zimmerman, Martin and then dozens of other bodies.

"While the PSA uses actual audio from George's non-emergency call and witness 911 calls, the visual details of the reenactment are wildly inaccurate and they are unsupported by the actual evidence," O'Mara wrote on his law blog.

"The George Zimmerman case was not a ‘stand your ground' case; it was clearly traditional self-defense, and therefore any campaign for the repeal of ‘stand your ground' laws predicated on the facts of the Zimmerman case is a non-starter, and any campaign that relies on misrepresentations and misinformation is doomed to fail," O'Mara continued, adding that those wanting a modification of the "stand your ground law" will need to have an "honest conversation."
