Severe thunderstorm warnings have been in effect for Sumter and Polk counties Wednesday afternoon.  Storms in Marion County have produced excessive lightning and winds up to 50 miles per hour.

From 4 p.m. until 5 p.m., radar indicated nearly 8,000 lightning strikes over all of Central Florida.

"This stormy pattern is thanks to deep easterly winds tapping into moisture over the Atlantic," said Local 6 meteorologist Julie Broughton. "Rain coverage today has been around 40-50 percent."

Rain chances are 40 percent in the afternoon as the high temperature reached 92 degrees.  The heat index, however, will make it feel like it's 100.

Temperatures will be above the average of 91 for the next few days.

Highs will reach 93 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

Rain chances remain at 40 percent into the weekend, with slightly drier air arriving by Saturday.
