Coast Guard searches 24 miles east of Ponce Inlet

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – The Coast Guard says they have identified the body found 20 miles off the Volusia County coast as the missing Maitland diver.

The search began Monday after the diver, identified Tuesday by the Coast Guard as Ryan Myers, 28, of Maitland, failed to resurface about 24 miles east of Ponce de Leon Inlet in New Smyrna Beach.

The Coast Guard said a crew aboard the fishing vessel Yellowfin reported around 11 a.m. Monday that a man with 30 minutes of oxygen had not resurfaced.

On Wednesday Coast Guard officials confirmed the body was in fact, Myers.

The divers located the body with diving gear on about 30 miles east of Ponce De Leon Inlet at 12:54 p.m. in the location where Myers was diving.

Fellow divers said Myers is an experienced diver with the appropriate certifications for the conditions in which he was diving, according to the Coast Guard.
