Ocala woman lost $50K in dating website scam, deputies say

Marion County Sheriff's Office to hold workshop on dating scams

OCALA, Fla. – Marion County deputies are searching for the man who they say scammed an Ocala woman he met through a dating website out of $50,000.

A 66-year-old woman started a relationship with someone through a dating website and after talking for weeks, the man asked her for money for a humanitarian project in Malaysia, according to deputies.

The woman then wired $50,000 to the man and then he stopped talking to her.

Deputies are setting up a workshop to teach people how to spot similar scams on dating websites. It will be held on 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on October 6 at the sheriff's headquarters in Ocala.
