ORLANDO, Fla. – The attorney for George Zimmerman has landed a new gig as a legal analyst on CNN.
Former Local 6 legal analyst Mark O'Mara posted on his law blog on Friday that he appeared on CNN's New Day program to offer insights to a potential "stand your ground" case in Florida as "CNN's newest legal analyst.
"As of today, I'll be appearing regularly on CNN to offer my insight on a number of high-profile legal matters," O'Mara wrote. "I'm hoping that serving as a legal analyst for CNN will allow me to contribute some thoughtful, moderated insight to what could otherwise be sensational or inflammatory issues."
O'Mara said the Zimmerman case sparked a nationwide conversation on race, guns, self-defense laws, the criminal justice system and the media, and that he wants to use his new position as a way to speak out about the issues.
"If we have the courage to talk about these issues honestly, thoughtfully, and with an open mind, then there is a chance the conversation about these hot-button issues can draw us closer together rather than push us further apart," O'Mara said.
Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder charges in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in July 2013.
