Brevard man who hit, killed fishermen ordered to construct memorials

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A man who hit three fisherman, killing two, while driving across an Eau Gallie Causeway bridge in April was ordered today to do 120 hours of community service constructing memorials for the men he killed.

Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports Vincent Worbington, 43, looked down at a text message as he crossed the bridge east of the causeway late April, killing  Garrett Viccaro, Justin Mitchell, and Jeff VanReenen. Viccaro, 24, and Mitchell, 25, died at the scene.

Their families and Van Reenen attended the hearing Monday afternoon, asking the judge for stiff penalties. Worbington sobbed, and apologized as he faced them.

"I am so sorry," he said. "I can't imagine your grief."

Worbington was charged with careless driving after the wreck and pleaded guilty to the citation today.

Judge David Silverman ordered Worbington to take a defensive driving class, pay a $1,000 fine and do the community service. The judge suspended Worbington's driver's license for 10 years, though that may change depending on Worbington's progress with community service work.
