Man caught after losing pants while robbing church gift shop, deputies say

Mary Queen of the Universe church maintenance director takes down robber

ORANGE COUNTY ,Fla. – Orange County deputies have arrested a man they say was caught by a maintenance director robbing a church gift shop when the robber lost his pants.

The robbery occurred at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe off of Interstate 4 on Vineland Avenue on Wednesday.

Anthony Garcia, 32, has been charged with robbery after he went into the shop, unarmed, demanding money.

The church's maintenance director then chased Garcia out of the store, but as he ran, he started to lose his pants and the director pulled them down, tripping Garcia.

The maintenance director was able to hold Garcia down until deputies arrived to help.

"He (the director) felt confident that he could knock suspect down and pull his pants down because of the situation," said OCSO's Jane Watrel.

Deputies say Garcia's wife walked into the bookstore, surprised to find her husband allegedly robbing the shop.

The shop is the largest catholic bookstore in the southeast.

Garcia was taken to Orange County Jail.
