Driver ejected, killed in 2-vehicle wreck

LAKE MARY, Fla. – A driver was killed early Friday in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 4 in Seminole County, prompting officials to close the interstate for several hours.

Ronald Vangelder, 48, of Sanford, died in the crash, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-4 near mile marker 98.  The interstate reopened around 7:40 a.m.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Vangelder was driving a Hyundai Essence at a high rate of speed and rear-ended a pickup truck, causing the car to roll over multiple times and ejecting Vangelder, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries, troopers said.

An investigation is ongoing.

Another vehicle was damaged after driving through debris, troopers said.
