Head Start in Volusia County stays open thanks to donor

Costs per day to run operation near $32k

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Thanks to an anonymous donor, Head Start programs in Volusia County will be open this week, despite the government shutdown.

Fourteen Head Start centers in the county were scheduled to be closed last Friday because funding was cut off due to the shutdown.  The donation, however, allows the facilities to remain open through this Friday, with the hope that government will be reopened by then.

The centers serve more than 600 children, according to Mid Florida Community Services, the community action agency that runs Head Start, which has about 125 employees.

It costs an estimated $31,700 per day to keep the Volusia Head Start program operational.
