MELBOURNE, Fla. – Melbourne police on Wednesday served two search warrants on businesses suspected of being involved in illegal gambling at Internet arcades.
Police said the Internet gambling arcades are located at 1600 S. Babcock Street and 1717 N. Wickham Road.
The two locations closed earlier this year when the governor banned Internet cafes, but according to police, they reopened in late August.
Citizens called police asking if they were legal, prompting a two month undercover operation.
The owners of the facility have not been arrested. Police say they are still investigating and arrests could come soon.
The arrest of 57 people earlier this year prompted the Florida Legislature to ban Internet cafes. The Allied Veterans case also led to the resignation of former Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, who had worked as a consultant.
In August 2012, a security guard at the Internet cafe on Babcock Street in Melbourne shot a would-be robber.
