ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County engineers say results of a new study show red light cameras reduce accidents, and they want to install more at dangerous intersections.

A project manager for the Orange County Traffic Engineering Division released a study that focused on 10 red light cameras over two time periods, July 2011-June2012 and July 2012-June 2013.
Overall, the study found the number of red light violations decreased by 25 percent; the number of crashes decreased by 14 percent and the crash rates fell 11 percent.
"The most significant decrease was seen at the intersection of Hiawassee Road and Clarcona Ocoee Road," said Engineer Krista Barber.
Thirty-four crashes were recorded at that intersection from July 2011-June 2012. Only 16 were recorded July 2012-June 2013, she said.
Barber says Orange County plans to install 40 more red light cameras by April 2014, and she hopes to have a total of 80 installed throughout the county over the next two years.
"Orange County will conduct additional studies and continue to look at data that will help determine trends and the effectiveness of the program," Barber said.
