TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Educators, business groups and lawmakers are pushing legislation that would add a new graduation requirement for Florida high school students: A mandatory, half-credit course in financial literacy.
State Senator Dorothy Hukill in Volusia County wants to make a whole course on credit cards and personal finance mandatory for high schoolers. The Florida Council on Economic Education says students should take a stand-alone "money course" that prepares to manage their finances as adults.
Lawmakers have already required school districts to include financial literacy in their high school economics curriculum.
If the bill passed it would take effect in the next school year.
