Brevard County Fire Rescue 911 dispatcher helps deliver baby girl

25-year-old dispatcher helped man deliver 37-week-old baby over phone

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A Brevard County Fire Rescue dispatcher helped a caller deliver a baby girl on Monday morning.

BCFR said Logan Reedy, 25, took the 12-minute call from a man saying the mother's water broke early Monday morning. BCFR said they never even made it to counting contractions and the baby was born.

Reedy said the baby started breathing and crying immediately, according to BCFR. He had to instruct the caller to wipe off the baby's face and then find string -- in this case, a shoelace -- to tie off the umbilical cord, officials said.

The baby was wrapped in clean towels until the rescue crew arrived to cut the cord and brought the baby to Wuesthoff Medical Center in Rockledge.

"It's a big deal in dispatch because we rarely get the timing just right to be on the phone when the baby comes," Reedy said.

The baby was born at 37 weeks and the mother had not yet picked out a name, officials said.

Reedy has worked for Brevard County Fire Rescue for about six years. Reedy earned his stork pin, a symbol given to a 9-1-1 dispatcher who handles a  delivery of a baby over a phone.
