LEESBURG, Fla. – Lake County sheriff's deputies shot a suicidal man who lifted a gun in an apparent attempt to shoot the law enforcement officers, officials said.

Lynn Owen Burnett, 60, of Leesburg, was injured in the shooting, which happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday at a home on Ocklawaha Drive in the Bassville Park area of Leesburg.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, a neighbor called authorities to say a man was threatening to commit suicide.

Deputies were confronted by the man, later identified as Burnett, who they said had a firearm.

While trying to talk to Burnett, "He leveled his firearm at our deputies who were forced to discharge their service weapon," the Sheriff's Office said.

"Unfortunately, in a situation like this, you really have no idea where this is going to go, especially when they are armed with a firearm like in the case," Lake County sheriff's spokesman James Vachon said.  "It's not something anybody wants to get into in this line of work.  Unfortunately, it happens."

Burnett was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital, and he was alert after the shooting, deputies said.  His condition, however, was not known.

No deputies were injured.

Two deputies were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in shootings.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
