NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A 56-year-old surfer pulled from the ocean off New Smyrna Beach died after an apparent medical episode.

The man's friends took him to shore and lifeguards tried to resuscitate him.  The man was then taken to a hospital, where he died Tuesday night.

Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Marris said the man was sitting on his surfboard about 6:45 p.m. when he fell into the water, possibly after having a stroke.

Marris says the man had complained of chest pains earlier in the day.

Authorities have not released the man's name.
