Controlled burn turns into brush fire, officials say

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Crews are battling a brush fire in Titusville after a controlled burn got out of control Monday and charred hundreds of acres.

The fire began as a controlled burn inside the Saint Johns National Wildlife Refuge. The fire jumped the lines and began spreading near Fox Lake Park west of Interstate 95.

Brevard County Fire Rescue says 600 acres were burned in the prescribed fire, but that the out of control fire charred another 600 acres.

As of late Monday night, firefighter said the fire is about 50 percent contained. Crews will be monitoring the fire but officials say no homes are in immediate danger.
