Lake County animal shelter closed until further notice

Parvo virus kills 16 dogs at Tavares shelter

TAVARES, Fla. – The Lake County Animal Services shelter is now totally closed to the public because of the outbreak of a deadly virus.

Initially, the shelter in Tavares closed only its dog adoptions and intake after the outbreak of the parvovirus earlier this week. Thursday, the shelter announced as a precaution, it was expanding the shutdown to include all animals.

Animal services says it had to euthanize 16 dogs because of the parvo outbreak. Parvovirus is extremely contagious and often life-threatening to dogs. The shelter says it is trying to contact anyone who adopted dogs within the past two weeks and is also notifying local veterinary clinics about the situation. Workers are also cleaning and disinfecting the building.

It is not known when the shelter may reopen to the public.
