Lake County animal shelter reopens after parvovirus outbreak

16 dogs euthanized in Tavares because of virus

TAVARES, Fla. – Lake County Animal Services shelter in Tavares reopened Monday under a veterinarian's guidance after last week's confirmed cases of parvovirus that resulted in the death of 16 dogs.

"We have been working under the close supervision of our veterinarian and she feels confident we have eliminated the spread of the virus," said Brian Sheahan, Community Safety & Compliance director. "The shelter is now reopened with full services, including dog and cat adoptions, intake, and night-drop kennels."

The shelter closed May 1 for extensive cleaning after dogs tested positive for the highly contagious virus. Animal Services management chose to err on the side of caution and close the shelter to the public while following veterinary protocols for disinfecting the building, surrounding areas and transport vehicles.

Canine parvovirus is highly resistant, often life-threatening viral disease in dogs that affects the intestinal tract, according to the ASPCA. Symptoms include lethargy, severe vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite.

Anyone who has adopted a dog from the shelter within the last two weeks that is showing these signs is urged to take their dog to their veterinarian immediately.

Due to last week's events, Lake County Animal Services Rabies Clinic & Adoption Event scheduled for May 17 will be rescheduled.
