Leesburg police: Missing woman found dirty, confused

LEESBURG, Fla. – Leesburg police say they have found a woman who had been missing for more than a month.

Police arrived around 2:07 p.m. at the Walmart at 2501 Citrus Boulevard after someone reported finding a woman lying in the bushes at the edge of the parking lot.

Police and emergency medical responders who also arrived found a woman walking in the area of the parking lot.

The woman was positively identified as 74-year-old Traute Rankin, who was reported missing from her Leesburg home on May 2, police said.

Police said Rankin was dirty and slightly confused, but she appeared to be in good health. She was transported to Leesburg Regional Medical Center by Lake EMS for a medical evaluation.

Police are talking to Rankin to find out where she had been over the past month. They do not belive foul play was involved in her disappearance and think she left on her own.

When Rankin was reported missing, family members said she often times walked to the Walmart from her home.

Her son-in-law told Local 6 the family is elated that Rankin is safe, but they still have the same questions as the police concerning her whereabouts.
