APOPKA, Fla. – An Orange County teacher was charged with molestation and sexual performance on a minor following her arrest on child neglect charges after police say not only did she not report her boyfriend's sexual abuse of a minor, but took part in the act.
Kimberly Honaker, 48, a sixth-grade language arts teacher at Apopka Middle School, was booked into jail on Saturday on $1,000 bond and faces two felony charges, Apopka police said.
Honaker was re-arrested on Tuesday afternoon and taken to the Orange County jail, where she is being held without bond.
Apopka police said Honaker let her live-in boyfriend, 58-year-old Robert Pruitt, who was accused of sexual abusing a minor, live in her home and didn't report the abuse to authorities. The school was not involved in the investigation, according to police.
Pruitt told police about the abuse and named everyone involved, saying Honaker took part in the sexual acts with the 13-year-old, according to police. Police said Honaker allowed Pruitt to have sexual relations with the juvenile over a period of weeks.
Police say Honaker also failed to protect another teen that was not sexually assaulted.
Police said Pruitt's wife called police after finding Facebook messages eluding to his sexual relationship with the teen. Pruitt's wife kicked him out and he moved in with Honaker, according to police, who in turn turned a blind eye to the sexual abuse.
Wednesday is the last day of school for Orange County students and the school district said Honaker won't be allowed back in a classroom until the board completes its investigation. She is on relief of duty with pay.
Apopka Middle School left a voicemail for parents, saying "You may see media reports regarding one of our teachers who was arrested this past weekend for a situation unrelated to any of the duties the teacher performs here at our school."
Honaker has been employed with Orange County Public Schools since 1997.
The Department of Children and Families said both teens involved in the sexual abuse case were taken into protective custody on Sunday and are in foster care. They will receive counseling, according to DCF.
