Man arrested in alleged rape in Maitland park

Police say man raped 15-year-old girl

MAITLAND, Fla. – Maitland police arrested a man they say raped a 15-year-old girl in a neighborhood park for more than three hours Friday evening.

Police arrested 19-year-old Rufus Harvin for lewd activity, sexual assault and kidnapping charges after an assault at Bellamy Park.

Police were called to a home on Rogers Avenue after a juvenile reported the attack at the park.

Police said the girl told them she was at the park when Harvin approached while smoking pot.

The girl told police Harvin stated he wanted to have sex with her, but she felt uncomfortable and tried to get away.

That's when Harvin grabbed the victim and violently held her down while raping her, police said. The victim said she was held for about three hours against his will.

Police said the victim was battered and taken to the hospital where her injuries showed bruises on her body from being assaulted on a picnic table for about three hours.

Maitland officers were doing patrols in the area when they found Harvin still hanging around the park around 11 p.m., officials said.

Harvin was taken to the Orange County Jail where he faced a judge Saturday morning, police said.
