Gunman rapes, robs woman in Daytona Beach

Victim taken to rape crisis center

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A woman was raped and robbed at gunpoint early Monday in Daytona Beach, according to deputies.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said the attack happened in a wooded area near Freemont and South Ridgewood avenues.

According to deputies, a gunman grabbed the woman as she was walking from a friend's house and said, "I'm in control now.  If you do what I ask you to do, I will not hurt you."

The man then led the woman into the woods and raped her before leaving with her purse and two cellphones, deputies said.

The woman called authorities from a nearby pay phone, said deputies, who added that a condom wrapper was found near the area where the alleged attack occurred.

The woman was then taken to a rape crisis center.

The assailant was described as a black man, about 5 feet 5 inches tall with short hair.  He was wearing a blue jean jacket, a white shirt, tan shorts and red Converse sneakers.

An investigation is ongoing.
