Wet 'n Wild worker critically injured after being trapped underwater, police say

Man taken to Dr. Phillips Hospital in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Wet 'n Wild Orlando employee was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he became trapped underwater while cleaning a pool, police said.

The incident occurred just after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the water park, which is located at 6200 International Drive in Orlando.

Orlando police said another worker called for help while he pulled his coworker out of the water.

"A Wet 'n Wild team member has been transported to the hospital as the result of an incident," said Tom Schroder, of Universal Orlando, which owns the water park.  "Our attention is focused on assisting our team member and his family.  We are also working to understand exactly what happened, but have nothing else to share at this time."

The victim was taken to Dr. Phillips Hospital in Orlando in critical but stable condition.

Investigators appeared to be focusing on an attraction that houses two slides -- Surge and Disco H2O, both of which are multi-person water slides that use a large raft.

Video from Local 6 News helicopter Sky 6 showed at least one water slide that was closed.  Several law enforcement vehicles and officers were seen at the park.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the incident.
