Orange County voters pass sales tax

Up to $2 billion to improve old schools, construct new buildings

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orange County voters decided to continue the half-penny sales tax another 10 years to pay for school construction.

With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, the surtax passed 64 to 36 percent.

The plan will use up to $2 billion to continue to renovate older schools as well as build new ones. The taxes will also be used to convert schools to digital and enhance security.

With the tax, four relief schools will be built and renovations will be made to 59 existing schools.

The new tax will be implemented once the current one expires in 2015. The current tax was passed in 2002.
