MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – It came down to the final seconds Friday at Merritt Island High School after the Mustangs blocked Melbourne High School's last-second field goal.
Merritt Island kept the ball on the ground most of the game. Running back Chris Mathias had a nice 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give the Mustangs a 14-7 lead.
But Melbourne answered quickly, throwing the ball nearly ever snap on the next drive. Quarterback Cooper Cristiano threw a 19-yard touchdown to wide receiver Kevin Grant but a missed extra point still gave Merritt Island a 14-13 advantage.
Melbourne had a shot to win the game with 20 seconds left, but the Mustangs blocked a field goal, and went on to win 14-13.
