Car collides with SunRail train in Sanford

Driver hurt after crashing into train with 38 passengers on board

SANFORD, Fla. – Authorities are investigating after a 19-year-old driver crashed into a SunRail train, Sanford police said.

The vehicle crossed over into the path of the northbound-traveling train late Thursday evening at Old Lake Mary Road and West 25th Street.

Officials released the video on Friday from the crash as the front of the vehicle was smashed.

Witnesses told police the gate and lights at the train crossing were working properly. The vehicle was small enough to bump the arms of the gate as it drove through and struck the front of the train where the conductor was sitting, according to police.

Sanford police said the vehicle was totaled. The driver was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The SunRail train was not damaged. Police said 38 passengers were on the train at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported.
