Interstate 95 re-opened Sunday morning

Fatal accident shuts down Interstate 95

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that shut down Interstate 95 Saturday.

The accident happened just before 7 p.m. Saturday and at least one tractor trailer caught fire.

Troopers said one person was killed and several others were injured, although the number of people hurt is unknown. Several cars were involved in the crash.

Northbound Interstate 95 near Garden Street was shut down.

Troopers said the accident happened around 6:40 p.m. when a semi tractor-trailer driver hit an attenuator in the construction area after losing control of his truck.

Troopers said the truck blocked all northbound lanes and traffic came to a stop.

Troopers said another tractor trailer driver failed to see the stopped traffic and hit five cars, another semi, and three more cars.

The semi that failed to stop then caught fire and killed the driver.  Another car caught fire, but everyone escaped unharmed, troopers said.

Troopers said the exit ramp from Interstate 95 to State Road 46 will remain shut down for indefinitely because of damage.  Crews are working to repair the road.
