2nd birth of western lowland gorilla in 1 month, officials say

A gorilla is born at Disney.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A baby gorilla was born at Disney's Animal Kingdom, marking the second gorilla birth in one month, Disney officials announced Wednesday.

The endangered western lowland baby male gorilla was born Sept. 3 to mother Kashata and father Gino, joining another male gorilla born on Aug. 7.

"It's exciting to see a strong, nurturing family of this endangered species flourishing at Disney's Animal Kingdom," said Jay Therien, Animal Operations Manager for Disney's Animal Programs, in a release. "As our bouncing baby boy bonds with Kashata, we're thrilled with his health and development."

The gorilla family inhabits the wooded sanctuary of the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail at Disney Animal Kingdom.

Five gorillas have been born at Animal Kingdom as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan.
