Pilot hurt in Merritt Island small plane accident, Brevard deputies say

Deputies: Person lost control while taking off, came to rest past edge of runway

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – A pilot was hurt after a small plane accident on the runway at the Merritt Island Airport, according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrived around 2 p.m. Saturday to investigate an accident involving a yellow single-engine airplane.

Deputies said the pilot -- who was the only person inside of the plane -- lost control while taking off and came to a stop just past the edge of the runway.

The pilot suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Holmes Regional Hospital, deputies said.

The Sheriff's Office said the Federal Aviation Administration will be conducting the investigation into the cause of the accident.

The Merritt Island Airport resumed normal operations after the incident, deputies said.
