Haley Hodge injured over weekend on Merritt Island

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. – A 17-year-old Satellite High student has died after being injured in a weekend skateboarding accident on Merritt Island, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Haley Hodge died Tuesday after being injured around 9 p.m. Saturday on Tropical Island Lane on the southern portion of Merritt Island.

Hodge was being towed with a rope behind a Toyota Celica when she fell and was critically injured, the FHP said.  Brevard County sheriff reports said she struck her head.

Brevard County Fire Rescue paramedics found Hodge breathing but unresponsive.

Hodge was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne but later taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando for further treatment.  She died three days later.

The driver was a 19-year-old Rockledge man, but it's not known if charges will be filed against him.  The FHP continues to investigate the accident.

Brevard County School District officials said grief counselors would be made available at the school.
